‘What The Health’ Documentary Review

“What The Health” is a documentary I’ve wanted to watch for quite some time now and I finally got around to seeing it last night on Vimeo. I can tell you at first hand, it is the documentary that we as vegans have all been waiting for! It combines the little gems of neighbouring documentaries such as “Forks Over Knives”, and “Cowspiracy” into what I would call a beautiful all-rounder of putting an end to the Vegan stigma that we all hide in caves, eat grass and look like Tom Hanks from castaway after a year on the island.

It’s the perfect documentary to show surrounding omnivores that actually what they claim to be healthy and what vegans claim to be healthy are indeed at very different polar opposites. Did you know that sugar is NOT actually the link that people think that causes diabetes? And how carbohydrates are not the evil they are portrayed in the media? It really is quite an eye opener, and considering I have watched near enough almost 10 different food and health documentaries, thinking this can’t shock me any more than the others did, well….this one didn’t disappoint me in the shock department.

The shocking part of the documentary is that the companies that actually promote and support the cure of diabetes, heart disease and cancers are the downfall of their own apparent success. Continually taking massive amounts of sponsorship money in a ruthless act of greed and deception to the people who suffer with these illnesses, while promoting lifestyles around eating fatty red meats, high cholesterol fish, dairy and artificially pumped chicken breasts.

Covering just under 1 hour and 30 minutes of high quality, no bullshit facts, What The Health is not your typical ‘preachy’ vegan documentary. In fact the word ‘vegan’ was used potentially 5 times throughout the whole film. It reinforces everything you know as a vegan, that I am doing the absolute best for my body and that the chance of me going back to an omnivore diet is as much chance of me being struck by lightning on the moon.

It is a sorry fact to say, but ‘what the health’ taught me a valuable lesson, we have responsibility of our own health, and relying on the government for a magic cancer cure pill, or the perfect diet to eat for optimum health does not exist when it comes to bully corporations and their desire for money, greed and power. It really feels like a ‘Galactic empire’ from star wars, and that there is a small rebel force such as the plant based community who are trying the fight back and regain control of everyone’s lives.

My hope is that this documentary will be distributed to those who are uneducated in plant based lifestyles as it might be that key that someone needs to open the door to a life without containers of blood pressure medication, cholesterol medication, and diabetes medication.

As a final note, I would like to take my virtual hat off to both Kip Andersen and Keegan Kuhn for putting together what can only be called the grandfather of plant based documentaries as well as uncovering the greed and deception of the big food and pharma corporations. They have both taken a massive risk to put themselves on the line but have done so for the benefit of everyone who want to lead a life full of health and fulfilment.

    This documentary started out to be convincing and made a couple of good points about the food industry but then the facts contradicting basic physiology were just dead wrong and anyone that knows basic biology would be able to see through this crock of bullshit. As a Microbiologist,Dentist ,Anesthesiologist ,farmer and beekeeper,the information in the last half of this “documentary was nothing more than uninformed people telling lies. It was pretty pathetic.Shame on the producer for distributing false information to the public who may not know any better.You will get fat eating too many carbohydrates and despite the claims in this false film ,an all vegan diet will not cure your diseases.

    Hi Howard. Thank you for voicing your opinions, I always welcome them on my blog. 🙂 What The Health was created by experts in the field of nutrition. May I suggest you read the book ‘How Not To Die’ by Michael Greger? If you need sources and clinical proof studies in order to believe that a plant based diet is indeed a good one for you, I strongly recommend you read it. 🙂 I personally do not believe that you can get fat from eating too many carbohydrates. As well as the food you consume, sedentary lifestyles can contribute to anyone gaining weight no matter what you eat. Although throughout the documentary people with illness’ were followed, nowhere did it say it cures all diseases. Whole food plant based provides your body with all the nutrients you need and what the body desires to perform and heal optimally. One of the reasons why a plant based diet is so successful is because it is the best anti-inflammatory diet, hence why when people go vegan, their issues and ailments get better or disappear. 🙂
